Spotted a motherload of street art on our last trip to LA. Mostly in Silverlake. This piece happened to be just up from the amazing Necromance. Enjoy.

For the 1st annual Petaluma Rivertown Revival festival at Steamer Landing Park there was a loose river monster (which was later caught … see below), viking ships, SRL robots, Lagunitas, deep-fried pickles, and killer handmade crafts. If you missed it, you really missed out. One more reason to love this crazy-ass town.

They were lined up perfectly. Like, “you complete me” perfectly. Half man. Half Apple ad. A creature out of Greek marketing mythology. If only my crappy iPhone camera captured it more clearly. And that’s the smallest irony of this picture.
Spotted on Market Street, SF.

BONUS:

And if you’re heading into the LA Ogilvy office, don’t f-ing levitate above your f-ing motorcycle. David hates that.

NYC Friend of the Ümlaut Laura Miller snapped this killer pic. Love the suitcase slapped with stickers from his travels.
“As part of the King Tut exhibit coming to New York, they brought this statue of Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Underworld, down the East River and past the Statue of Liberty. I wasn’t working so I went down to the Brooklyn Bridge and checked it out.”
Ahh, to have a day off. I would’ve caught the actual exhibit when it was here! Read the rest of this entry »

Keep Your Eyes (and Ears) Open. Never know what you’ll see.
Spotted this chicken-filled stoop while cruisin’ around Petaluma. Coincidentally, just a block away from the ol’ Must-Hatch Incubator Co. building. Did you know the egg incubator was invented here? It’s one of the reasons we were known as The World’s Egg Basket. (And you thought we only invented the world sport of Wrist-Wrestling).

“Got chickens in the houses. We got chickens in the trees. Chickens in the pots of all the Petalumees … ”

Yes, this is for real. And yes, it is so freakin’ awesome.
It’s the secretly infamous, miniature golf course Ahlgrim Acres, in the basement of Ahlgrim Funeral Home. On our recent Chicago trip we finally made it up to Palatine to experience this amazing, oddball gem. Originally built for their kids back in the 60s, the 9 haunted holes (complete with spooky music) are open to the public; when they’re not conducting services, that is. More info below.

Jump the skull!

August putting through the coffin. Notice the real estate sign on top, “Homes for living“.

These ice-block racers had the right idea. Handcar Regatta 2009 was hotter than ever. Plus, it tripled the attendees and racers from its inaugural year. If you missed it, be sure to trek on up to Railroad Square in Santa Rosa next year.

Steampunk on stilts. Hopefully he’ll come to Whiskerino in costume.
Here’s a few more we caught flashin’ their cards at this year’s Handcar Regatta:

Brookelynn Morris, author of Feltique (yes, she wrote the book on felting), pictured with friend.

Nicole from Vinyl Frontier. Makers of recycled record cover notebooks, melted record bowls, record clocks and more. Very cool stuff. Read the rest of this entry »

Spotted these wheatpaste pieces on Market this morning. DigiDave says they’ve been poppin’ up around town. Is it just a random dude in a Yankees hat? Or is it bizarro Hank?

My bus stop is right by my favorite phone booth in all of Petaluma. Not because I ever use it, or even touch it. I just like that it actually exists. And it’s pink. Today, it was even better. Thanks to this Real California Cheese Pizza Guy flashin’ signs.
Blurred in the background—the famous neon sign that proudly proclaims, “This ain’t no limp crust sissy-boy pizza.” It sure isn’t. Homeslice will kick your ass if you don’t give him a quarter. Are calls still a quarter?

Snapped these on my way into work this morn.
What’s happening? To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Candyland, they’re turning the curvy part of Lombard Street into a real-life game for the kids of UC San Francisco Children’s Hospital and the nonprofit Friends of the Children to actually play. Isn’t that awesome?
