With Petaluma Whiskerino<\/a> growing closer, and\u00a0Lagunitas<\/a> being one of the many homegrown supporters, we’ve got beer and facial hair on the membrane.<\/p>\n

To celebrate, here’s a collection<\/a> of our favorite Craft Beerds\u2014label artwork graced by moustaches and beards.<\/p>\n

Moretti Moustache Man (old\/new)<\/h3>\n

What’s changed? For starters, his Reverse Hitler ‘Stache<\/em> has grown into a Flanders<\/em>. Also, his de-aged design has given him the strength to hoist the mug of Moretti<\/strong> with noticeable gusto.\u00a0Either way, glad they stuck with the man on the label. Referred to as, wait for it, “The Man on the Label”, he’s the official symbol of the Birra Moretti<\/strong> brand. A bit of his history via their site<\/a>:<\/p>\n

… In 1942, Birra Moretti had already been a popular drink all over Friuli for over 80 years. One day, Commander Lao Menazzi Moretti<\/strong> saw a pleasant-looking old man with a moustache sitting at a little table in the Boschetti di Tricesimo inn (Udine).
\nHe was just the kind of character Moretti<\/strong> had been looking for to represent the qualities and character of his beer: wholesome, traditional and authentic.
\n Commander Moretti<\/strong> didn\u2019t let him get away. He went up to him and asked the man if he could photograph him and also asked him what he would like in return. <\/em>“Cal mi dedi di bevi, mi baste”<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 answered the man in Friuli dialect, which means “Get me a drink, that\u2019ll do<\/strong>.”<\/em> [See his photo<\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

North Coast Brewing ‘Old Rasputin’<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Up in my top favorite, most-satisfying stouts\u2014among Goose Island<\/strong>‘s Bourbon County Stout<\/a>, Mikkeller<\/strong> Beer Geek Breakfast<\/a>, and Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout<\/strong>\u2014is North Coast<\/strong>‘s Old Rasputin Imperial Stout<\/a>. So rich. So good. So damn hairy.<\/p>\n

Lagunitas Brewing Company ‘Joseph’s Best Brown Ale’<\/h3>\n

Avery Brewing ‘The Kaiser’<\/h3>\n

With the spike on his helmet, his ‘stache looks like the fletchings on an arrow. Yes, fletchings are the feathers on the end of an archery arrow. I had to look it up, too. We both learned something today.<\/p>\n

Just nabbed a bottle of The Kaiser Imperial Oktoberfest<\/strong> from\u00a0Avery<\/a> in Colorado. Look for a review soon.<\/p>\n

New Glarus ‘Unplugged’<\/h3>\n

That’s brewmaster Dan Carey <\/strong>gracing the Unplugged<\/strong> series of ‘brewers choice’ beers from Wisconsin’s New Glarus Brewing Company<\/a>. Release four times a year. Same ‘stache. Different brew.<\/p>\n

How rad is\u00a0Half Acre<\/a>?\u00a0Aside from being in my motherland, Chicago, they ran one of the most badass promos ever for their Ginger Twin<\/strong> beer:<\/p>\n

Most of their beers feature the Danish brewing duo’s follicled faces somewhere on the label, but the Big Worse<\/a> mugshot is one of the better treatments. Haven’t tried yet, but if it’s anything like\u00a0Beer Geek Breakfast<\/a>, I’ll be happy.<\/p>\n

De Molen ‘Donder & Bliksem’<\/h3>\n

A mighty beard. A majestic head of hair. One good pair deserves another. De Molen<\/strong>‘s Donder & Bliksem<\/a> (which means thunder & lightning<\/em>) comes in two versions: the Dutch version, a Pilsner; the US version, a “Double Dutch Ale”. Go figure.<\/p>\n

Redhook ‘Big Ballard Imperial IPA’<\/h3>\n

This year Redhook<\/a> introduced this\u00a0as a nod to one of their first offerings, Ballard Bitter IPA<\/strong>,\u00a0dating all the way back to ’84 when they were still brewing in an old Ballard neighborhood transmission shop. (Update<\/span>: Thanks for the l\u00fcv<\/a>, Redhook<\/strong>!)<\/p>\n

Schloss Eggenberg ‘Samichlaus Helles’<\/h3>\n

Big white beards on Christmas beers aren’t a rare sight. With one exception\u2014a beer that’s only brewed once a year, on December 6th\u2014Samichlaus<\/strong>. The original and Helles<\/a> versions of\u00a0share the same bearded Santa Claus graphic (though I have an older version with just a North Star graphic). A Christmas tradition in the Abercrombie<\/strong> h\u00e4us for sure.<\/p>\n
