A night of many firsts \u2026 My first time at the historic Mystic<\/a>. My first Devendra show. Plus, a setlist crammed with a ton of songs performed live for the very first time. Including an impromptu first by an audience member. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Ryan,<\/a><\/p>\n

Mel and I ran into Ryan<\/a>, Van & Cambria from Port O\u2019Brien<\/a>.<\/p>\n

No they didn’t open for Devendra. Yes they’re a lot happier looking in person. If you haven’t picked up All We Could Do Was Sing<\/em>, snag it now from their site<\/a>. They may even have a new 7″ coming out. Simply wonderful.\u00a0Below’s the tune that started me on \u2018em. The perfect gateway drug into the rest of their stuff.<\/p>\n

\"Devendra<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/a>I was completely, pleasantly surprised at how fun this show was. It began how I expected: Solo Devendra doing the sparse, quivering, freak-folky stuff I like, but wasn’t ready for an entire evening of \u2026 it quickly blossomed as\u00a0band members, one by one,\u00a0joined the fold (starting with the\u00a0bedazzled, tunic-wearing drummer).<\/p>\n

The band had fun breaking in the new tunes. The show felt like one big party.<\/p>\n

\"Devendra<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

With all the \u201cfirsts\u201d performed, Devendra turned to the audience and asked, \u201cAnyone else have a song they\u2019ve never performed before?<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

From the few hands that went up he chose the girl pictured above, Yolanda.\u00a0She came up for the show from Phoenix. I guess she performs under the name \u201cSnow Songs<\/a>“. Her voice was good. Her wit was even better\u2014working in an apt reference to that Britain’s Got Talent Opera Singer<\/a> on the spot. Well done.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Venezuela<\/a><\/p>\n

They played a lot of his Spanish tunes, which made the Venezuelan-flag-carrying fans go apeshit.\u00a0Apparently,\u00a0Devendra spent 10+ yrs of his childhood there.<\/p>\n

Devendra Banhart “Carmensita”<\/a> from Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Petaluma<\/a><\/p>\n

Walking home from the Mystic, I had to stop by my favorite fountain in Petaluma. Perhaps all the world.<\/p>\n

This thing’s got layers … a drinking message on a drinking fountain, the play between “erected” and “abstinence”. Gold!<\/p>\n
