MP3: New Tommy Guerrero, Hey Sholay, Painted Palms, The Bewitched Hands on the Top of Our Heads, Ducktails and Edison :: Friday Five 01.28.11

A few San Francisco releases to look for today. New hip-shakin’ from Tommy Guerrero, who for as long he’s been making killer music I still cannot think of without hearing him crack “He’s got his own milk carton!” in Animal Chin (thanks to Aidin at MusicSF for the tip on his new album). A not-so-new but free EP from Painted Palms, who are actually an SF/New Orleans outfit via cassette-collaboration. And a bonus, a brand-spanking new release from the Monome maestro, Edison. Enjoy thoroughly.

Monome: Edison Offers Sneak Peek of New LP

Fast fingers. This view into a recent session shows Edison‘s latest Monome setup for his upcoming LP, People Are Bad Animals. The song is “Bring Out Your Dead”.

“things are getting more and more involved…
all 1 shot sounds, no loops…”

Which is why his fast fingers are workin’ with an extra quickness. Pretty impressive. [more on the Monome]

Here’s a tune from his last LP:

Edison “The Surface, and Under” from All The Information at Hand

Jeremy Fish Time Lapse: As The Mind Wanders, Decoder Ring #10

The Decoder Ring Design Concern is a design partnership in Austin, TX whose mission is “to do work we love for clients we admire.” They also do a series of fine art prints where they let you click-through the process layers of each artist’s work. Making the finished product that much more impressive.

This is the tenth installment in their Decoder Print Artist Series. Past artists include Tara McPherson, Gary Baseman, and Dalek.

Following this over the last several days I thought it’d be rad to see ’em in motion. Edison’s “Tonka Truck” felt like the perfect soundtrack. Enjoy.

Music: Edison Rocks The Monome

What the hell’s a Monome? In short, it’s a super-minimalist, programmable grid of buttons (8×8 square) for electronic music or gaming. You connect through USB to assign beats, samples, or whatever. Then mix and loop on the fly.

This clever lil’ vid best visualizes the Monome’s functions and potential:

Edison “Yellow and Blue” by mlandry.

When I posted a track from Edison on last week’s Friday Five, all I knew was what I heard: he rocked the Monome like no other. Next day, my friend Dalia shot me an email saying she actually works with the guy here in San Francisco. The city just gets smaller and smaller.

Dalia helped shoot this vid. 64 buttons. 64 sounds. Shot live with 2 cams. Edison killed it in one take. Rad.

Aside from being technologically fascinating, his music and beats make a killer work soundtrack. I’ve seriously got it on repeat.

Download an Edison MP3 here. Then buy the album.
