Beer: Dempsey’s Now Bottling Petaluma Strong Ale as PSA Extra IPA

Petaluma’s fortunate enough to not only have a terrific craft beer bar like TAPS, but also two breweries within a few miles of each other. Lagunitas of course, and the up-until-now Brewpub-only Dempsey’s.

The latter’s only 4 blocks from my house. Yet, just across the street from me is the Petaluma Whole Foods, where I stumbled across the freshly bottled first offerings from Dempsey’s Restaurant & Brewery. Surprise, surprise.

I spoke to Dempsey’s brewmaster Peter Burrell who confirmed they are indeed bottling on premises (via a mobile bottling service) and have almost sold out of their Irish Ale and Sonoma Mountain Wheat. For an inaugural six weeks that’s a pretty damn good start.

Here’s the bomber lineup and where you can find ’em:

Sonoma Mountain Wheat 4.7% ABV
Sonoma Irish Ale 5.2% ABV
Red Rooster 6% ABV
PSA 7.2% ABV

Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, Petaluma Market, Whole Foods, Wilibees (on Lakeville & East D),  Olde Sonoma Public House, Broadway Market in Sonoma, and Valley Ford Market.

Petaluma Strong Ale
Instead of the big juicy hops you expect from an imperial IPA, the PSA (what they’re calling an Extra IPA) is very sharp and dry. Complex, with hints of pepper and lime. Easily my favorite of their offerings. Worth hunting down a bomber or two. Even better to have fresh at the Brewpub overlooking the Petaluma River.
