If there’s a specially-commissioned art show to celebrate 50 years of the iconic Playboy Bunny, you know godfather of the Silly Pink Bunnies, Jeremy Fish, is gonna be on the list.
This June marks the 50th anniversary of the Bunny’s first appearance in the original Chicago Playboy Club. The art exhibition is only one in a series of parties they’re throwing to celebrate. Wonder if Fish’s mobile art show will make a stop at the opening? (Pic via TOTT)
Playboy Redux: Contemporary Artists Interpret the Iconic Playboy Bunny will be on display at the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh from March 27 through June 19, 2010, and will feature works by artists including Gary Baseman, Jeremy Fish, Scott Anderson, Jeremy Kost, Tara McPherson, Kalup Linzy and LaToya Ruby Frazier, among others.

Really cool theme for an art show: Buy thrift store art, then make it your own.
Over a dozen artists will be displaying their (upcycled?) creations. Pieces will be available for purchase. But the show’s one night only, so be there early! Details below.
I snuck pics of a couple pieces this afternoon. Gonna be rad.

And a deceptive little piece from Elaine Elwick Barr of Rock n Roll Crafts.

(Hidden in the trunk is a little surprise)

Come on out!

Many have attempted to collect and classify the various species of facial folliclery. None have attempted to collect those collections. Well, at least not here. Until now …

Friday was the last Skullz Press opening at the short-lived Divisadero space. Not sure where it’ll pop up next. First, Mike Giant is off to Italy.

The travel bug is hitting SF’s Jeremy Fish, so he’s hitting The Road Less Traveled.
“I need to get back to traveling badly. i put together a mobile art show of sorts. i plan to drive around, show some artwork, paint some murals, make some new friends, and swap a story here and there. coming to a town near you… stop by and bring me a beer… ”

Speaking of Elvis busts, had to show off my decanter sportin’ REBEL8 steez. Not the first time their gear’s popped up on the Umlaut.
Joshy D gave me this sticker back in ’04 when I was teaching at Academy of Art. He and Mike Giant were only a year into launching REBEL8. Then I was just happy to spot their gear around SF. Now, they’re on meteoric rise beyond the Bay. On Travis Barker and Lil Wayne. In insane collabs with SF’s Benny Gold and even Vans Shoes. I could not be more stoked.
Good dudes who’ve worked hard. Check out the latest from REBEL8. Follow their Twitter for special drops.

My oldest and most favorite desk tchotchke is a decanter-bust of the King. Plus, he was the soundtrack on My Hairy Commute. Suffice it to say, I loves me some Elvis. So when Rich sent me these incredible busts by Miss Lucky Hellcat I was floored. They’re not decanters, but they more than make up for it in style.
Check out her Dia De Los Muertos Elvis, Zombiefied Elvis, and even Joker Elvis. So rad. Thanks, Rich!

Cliff Chiang, the same guy who remixed album covers with DC Super Heroes, also did a mini set of Super Heroines done up like Vargas and Elvgren style pinups called Atomic Bombshells. You can buy miniprints of the set for only 20 bones. Update: The miniprints are sold out. Bummer.
As for Battle Of The Planets, I had to wake up pretty damn early to watch this when I was a kid. Here’s the trailer for the original cartoon, also known as Gatchaman:

Check out this series of album cover remixes by über-talented illustrator Cliff Chiang. The remixed liner notes / quotes that go alongside each are great, too. The last one he did was last summer. Hope there’ll be more. Love stuff like this.

These rockin’ shirts are hand stenciled by the stylish hands of Elaine Elwick Barr @ Rock n Roll Crafts. She’s the one and only artist licensed to use Stencil 1 designs from Ed Roth (no, not that one). But like Big Daddy, she’s good with the customs. So when you see a design you like, she’ll spray it up in practically any colors you can think of. On any color shirt (well, that American Apparel can think of).
