Yes, this is for real. And yes, it is so freakin’ awesome.
It’s the secretly infamous, miniature golf course Ahlgrim Acres, in the basement of Ahlgrim Funeral Home. On our recent Chicago trip we finally made it up to Palatine to experience this amazing, oddball gem. Originally built for their kids back in the 60s, the 9 haunted holes (complete with spooky music) are open to the public; when they’re not conducting services, that is. More info below.

If I did nothing else this week, I got zombies on the Yahoo! sign. A three-year first. It’s the little things, folks.

Granted, I have the mind of a 12 yr old. But, c’mon. No one in the process raised a red flag to this? (Spotted in the latest Wired.)
Just as I was posting this, Scott sends me this other WTF ad on Gizmodo. It’s a banner day for the gutter-minded!

IDAHO–Neighbors spotted this in a backyard and called the cops, citing an “unknown species”. Turns out, it was one seriously neglected, horrificly nappy-dreaded pooch. I can smell it from here. Poor lil’ stinker. Full story. (Thanks, Mel!)

My wife was searching the For Sale section of Craigslist and spotting this screaming deal. Here’s what it said:
“I was having a snack when this odd nut ended up in my hand. … Other nuts of this rare shape have gone for thousands more. You know you want it. Grab my nut before someone else does.
One just like this sold for $500 on Ebay a few months back.”
C’mon. A nut that looks like a dong? Priceless. See if it’s still available. (Thanks, Mel!)

These ice-block racers had the right idea. Handcar Regatta 2009 was hotter than ever. Plus, it tripled the attendees and racers from its inaugural year. If you missed it, be sure to trek on up to Railroad Square in Santa Rosa next year.

This mythical, majestic creature crossed our path en route to the Great Handcar Regatta 2009. A Diger?

Steampunk on stilts. Hopefully he’ll come to Whiskerino in costume.
Here’s a few more we caught flashin’ their cards at this year’s Handcar Regatta:

Brookelynn Morris, author of Feltique (yes, she wrote the book on felting), pictured with friend.

August at the Make Zine booth with a freshly felted ‘stache, courtesy of Melissa and Brookelynn’s handiwork.

Sid Phillips from Portland’s March Fourth Marching Band.

Nicole from Vinyl Frontier. Makers of recycled record cover notebooks, melted record bowls, record clocks and more. Very cool stuff. See the rest »

Spotted these handlebar door handles at last night’s Bon Iver show at the Fox. I know I’ve got Whiskerino on the membrane, but these were just too rad not to share.

Because your kitchen needs more fun. And more rock. Check it out the Flipper Guitar Spatula, 45 Trivets, and other goodies at Gama-Go, the same fine folks who brought us the Flying-V Guitar Pillow:

Pure hell on wheels.
“The Dübble Trübble, built in 1953 by legendary racer Bud Hare, was a beastly Triumph twin-engined motorcycle that dominated the drag strips during the 1950s with a top speed of 142.38 mph. The dual 40 cu. in. displacement engines were fed through a Harley-Davidson hand-shift gearbox with foot clutch. Only two gears are used–second and high.”
Whoa. And whoa.

Look who’s number four on the Yahoo! Most Emailed Photos gallery? It’s Frenchman and International World Beard & Moustache Championship participant, Herve Diebolt. Time to step it up for Petaluma Whiskerino. Three more weeks, folks. You’ve got time. (Thanks, Todd!)
