Maybe it’s the impending SF snow but we’ve never had a Friday Five with so many white LP covers. Even if the TVOTR shot isn’t the final cover, I’m caught up in snow mania. Here’s a bunch of tunes to add to your winter shopping list. Enjoy thoroughly.
A few San Francisco releases to look for today. New hip-shakin’ from Tommy Guerrero, who for as long he’s been making killer music I still cannot think of without hearing him crack “He’s got his own milk carton!” in Animal Chin (thanks to Aidin at MusicSF for the tip on his new album). A not-so-new but free EP from Painted Palms, who are actually an SF/New Orleans outfit via cassette-collaboration. And a bonus, a brand-spanking new release from the Monome maestro, Edison. Enjoy thoroughly.
Much to dig … Killer Nuggets-y rock from Mind Spiders (ex-Marked Men). Super trio Middle Brother brings the type of rootsy harmonies you expect (and love) from ex-Dawes, Deer Tick, Delta Spirit members. Ex-Vivian Girls singer Katy Goodman goes off on her own for a sweet La Sera. Panda Bear helps Ducktails ready for a new LP. Shout out to MattO for getting the Kordan jam lodged in my head and stuck on repeat. Finally a 3-day, lazy weekend bonus track from The Poison Tree will bring undeniable National comparisons but the duel male/female vocals give ’em a little something special. Influences aside, it’s a wonderful track. Enjoy thoroughly.
“So I’ve been writing music in my basement for a few years now. Fight club was a very influential movie in my high school days [daze] and I loved the song at the end. Since then, I’ve heard it thousands of times and decided to make a chip-tune cover of it for your listening pleasure. I’ve performed this song live on a handful of occasions and it’s always been a favorite. I’ll try and get the sax and guitar parts uploaded someday. Enjoy!”
